Sweet Treats for Mom

This weekend is Mother’s Day, and it also is my mom’s birthday. I am lucky that my mom is easy to please on Mother’s Day, but everyone loves a small gesture to help them feel appreciated.

If Mother’s Day has snuck up on you and you are stressing out, I am here to tell you sweet treats are the way to many mothers’ hearts.

If you think this may be the case for your mother, or yourself, I have the scoop on 3 local chocolate shops to upgrade your gift-giving game. (A note to my mom – if you don’t want any Mother’s Day/Birthday spoilers, stop reading now.)

In the name of research, I threw myself on my sword and set out to sample chocolates throughout town. My first stop was Fera’wyn’s Chocolate Cafe in Holly Springs.

Located at 652 Holly Springs Rd., this lovely treasure is a delight to discover. Founded by husband and wife team David & Johna Whittingham, it is a recent addition to our area.

They provide handcrafted, beautiful chocolates, pastries and coffees. They put together a beautiful box of truffles for me for $21, wrapped in a lovely gift box and special Mother’s Day ribbon.

Some of the flavors available are Bourbon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Masala Chai, Limoncello, Peanut Butter, and much more.

Fera’wyn’s is a great choice for anyone with any dietary issues as well. They provide a variety of gluten-free and vegan options.

If your mom is more into experiences, they also occasionally provide chocolate classes. For more information, visit http://ferawyns.com/ . To find upcoming classes, follow them on Facebook under Fera’wyn’s Artistan Chocolates.

My next visit was to Tsuru Sweets and Coffee, a recent addition to Fuquay Varina. It is located at 411 Broad Street. Tsuru provides handcrafted chocolates, scrumptious pastries and cofffees. They also serve macarons and the most beautiful tarts I have ever seen.

Tsuru’s Delicacies

I sacrificed myself for you, dear readers, by sampling a chocolate croissant. It was amazing. I will definitely need to try their other baked goods soon.

In addition to the croissant, I also bought a box of 5 macarons for $10. They are beautifully boxed and ready for gift-giving. Currently on Mondays, you can get a box of 5 macarons for 25% off. They are also running a special for Mother’s Day and you can get 12 macarons for $22.

Colorful Macarons

The truffles at Tsuru are sometimes unusual but always delicious combinations, like Ginger Lemon and Rose Coconut. My favorite is the Earl Grey dark chocolate. They are each a work of art in their own right, but can also be presented in a gift box of 6. For Mother’s Day, you can get a box of 16 chocolates for $38.

My third stop was also in Fuquay Varina, the Chocolate Fix located at 135 South Main St. The Chocolate Fix is run by George & Kelly Burnett.

Chocolate Fix in downtown Fuquay Varina

The Burnetts don’t make their chocolates onsite, but have them shipped to them from their hometown of Sharon, Pennsylvania. They have a wonderful assortment of chocolates that you can buy individually or by the pound. They have milk, dark and white chocolate options and a great selection of sugar free chocolates.

You can build a box of mom’s favorite varieties. A pound box of any combination is $18.95. (Sugar Free is a little more.) They have classic selections, like meltaways, chocolate jellies, turtles and much more. My favorites are the dark chocolate raspberry jellies and dark chocolate sea salt caramels.

They also have chocolate covered potato chips in milk or dark. They sound strange, but they are a yummy, crunchy combo of salty and sweet.

Another fun option at Chocolate Fix is the mix and match classic candy bins. You can make a bag of mom’s childhood favorites for $5.95 a pound.

If you have already figured out your gift for mom, consider taking her out another day to visit one of these local gems. Any day is a good day for chocolate.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and Happy Mother’s Day!
